Letter from the Secretary-General

It is my absolute privilege to announce the sixth edition of the VIT Chennai Model United Nations.

I had the opportunity of understanding all about Model UN Conferences after being exposed to the concept pretty early into my school life. It was introduced to me as a public speaking competition, and was told that these events could serve as a brilliant stepping stone to help me understand ways to improve my oratory and debating skills. Even though this was not the full picture, it did provide a good insight into the same.

As I participated in more MUNs along the way, I understood that the purpose of a Model UN Conference was not just to help one improve their public speaking abilities, but also to generate and spark interest in the work that the United Nations engaged in, and concurrently raise awareness about the numerous critical issues that are often overlooked by the average citizen. Model UN conferences help incredibly in improving critical thinking, reasoning, and logical analysis. It gives participants a chance to understand the insights behind raw data and figures. With the internet at our disposal nowadays, it is incredibly easy to get information on world issues; statistics are readily available. MUNs empower individuals to discern from competitive debate, and look at the bigger picture. MUNs are brilliant forums for knowledge, and understanding issues of international importance-be it from the geopolitical, economic, social, security, or cultural aspects.

VIT Chennai Model United Nations has consistently been one of the best conferences in India. We have always hosted brilliant competition across multiple types of committees in our previous editions. I firmly believe that VITCMUN stands for the academic nature of these conferences. VIT Chennai Model United Nations has, ever since its inception, been envisioned as a conference that fosters competition at its greatest potential.

Our Executive Board members are filtered, and chosen through an elaborate selection process. With an extensive understanding of international affairs paired with brilliant experience, they have time and again ensured that the participants take astute learning back home after the conference. VITCMUN has been providing breakthroughs in delegate resources time and again. Our Tech team, through the last three editions has brought immense progress in the form of electronic chits (e-chits) to the Chennai MUN Circuit. Developed completely by a team of highly motivated students, it provides an alternative approach to the question of chits in a Model UN Conference. Our e-chit system facilitated a grand total of 3129 chits in VITCMUN 2019. This time, we will be trying to interpolate further on this concept, and attempt to ensure ease of access for council proceedings in various ways.

It is with great pride and honour, that I warmly invite you to the sixth edition of this conference on the 20th,21st, and 22nd of March, 2020.
